This is beautiful. Is this Minnesota? My son lives in Plymouth where he just built a house last year but he wants to buy some acreage and build something. He plays golf at a place called Windsong which is beautiful also. I live in Virginia but could see spending more time up there. You are smart, you are engaged, and you seem to savor every moment of your life. I so enjoy reading your posts and seeing your pictures. Thank you.
Thank you! This land is about 2 !/2 hrs north of Plymouth. This is really the most enjoyable time of year on this land, the colors, the weather and the lack of biting insects. Ironically the summer months can be the least enjoyable time on this land, as this area of Minnesota is very flat and there are wetlands that snake through the landscape for many miles in every direction, which is great habitat for mosquitos and horse flies. In the Twin Cities there is a lot of treatment to wetlands to limit the number of mosquitos, but here the population density is some of the lowest in the state of people and the highest density of mosquitos. Otherwise there are many lakes areas where the bugs are not so bad, and along the Mississippi and St Croix rivers few mosquitos because there is very little standing water in the ridge country around the rivers.
Its hard to believe you would ever have lived in that grusesome city when you have that which you live in now. New Zealand is one big dairy farm. We have almost nothing like that, and our trees are deep green temperate boring.
I was dreaming about living here 20 years ago. I guess I was young, and the city beckoned. I learned a lot living there, ironically it was in the city I planted an orchard and rewilded my lot. I think I am ready now to do similar here.
Sorry to hear about New Zealand. I hear it is extraordinarily beautiful there. But then I suspect there is a connection between "one big dairy farm" which I assume is mostly industrial, and Jacinda Ardern and your CCP-like covid policies.
Lovely. Years ago, I read some of Wendell Berry's writing on responsible forestry. I later met a New England forester who had taken part in some amazing conservation projects that also allowed for continued human use. There's a happy medium and it looks like you found it. Thanks for the post and the pictures!
I can see it, but there is a lot of work between here and there. That is how I would like to manage it, for health of the forest and for production. Wendell Berry is a national treasure.

Love Wendell Berry...had the pleasure of hearing him speak years ago at an event when I lived in NM. He is a treasure!
