[again, a post too long for email]
I’ve mentioned several times in this substack how few pollinators I have seen this year. This despite that I have spent more time outside this spring into fall than I have in a long time, and much of that time travelling through the parks and wild places of Minnesota and Wisconsin. I have seen maybe a dozen monarch butterflies, about that many honeybees, maybe a half dozen bumblebees, a few of any given native bee species, one or two of any other species of butterflies. Dragonfly too are almost non-existent.
Ten years ago I would have seen more than that in one hour in my garden.
There are three primary reasons for this, the first being a loss of habitat, the second being globalization and all the invasive pests and fungal diseases our native pollinators have no defense against, the third being the prevalence of nicocontinoid pesticides and pesticides generally. Many of the plants that are sold in plant nurseries are sprayed with such poison. Go into any box store and you will find all kinds of such poison. Industrial agriculture is profligate with such poison. It was also a very hot and dry year last year in the midwest, to make it much worse for pollinators. It is also true that the three primary commodity crops in America, corn, soybean and wheat, do not require pollinators. So who cares about pollinators?
Someone thinking about growing a lot of their own food certainly would. Most of the vegetables grown by say, a homesteader, require pollinators. If you have a big sustenance garden you have plenty of work to do, you don’t want to be out there with a swab going from flower to flower.
And you should care even if you don’t garden, as a third of the food Americans eat is dependent on pollinators - every bit of that fruit you eat especially.
I did a brief online search of articles on pollinator decline. Most of what comes up is from education and government agencies and NGO’s, articles that are not new necessarily, most of which start the same way, that it is a global phenomenon, that it is about climate. This article from the USDA Reversing Pollinator Decline is Key to Feeding the Future is one of the first to come up, and it is from 2017. Clearly the USDA has not reversed it, quite the opposite. In the first six pages of a duckduckgo search I found one article from a mainstream news source, CNN turning pollinator decline into climate change propaganda
One-third of the food we eat is at risk because the climate crisis is endangering butterflies and bees
There is clearly not any urgency around actually doing anything about taking care of the insects a third of our food supply is dependent upon. But you will be happy to know the EPA this July declared the Monarch butterfly migration endangered - about a dozen years too late.
For contrast, I ran a search on edible insects.
BONANZA. IT’S THE FUTURE! SOME OF THESE LINKS EVEN ENCOURAGE YOU TO EAT POLLINATORS.
So riddle me this: why is there almost no concern about a very real apocalyptic thing like the extinction of pollinators, a third of our food supply depends upon, but such a clear and present DEMAND that you make insects a primary part of your diet, while acting like meat eating is a plague upon the planet, when no human in the 200,000+ year history of Homo Sapien has ever made insects the PRIMARY part of their diet unless otherwise starving?
I would encourage you to watch this before you get sucked in to the vortex that edible insects is becoming. This is a talk on the anti-human, eugenicist pathology that is the “green new deal”, it’s origins and the democide in America and Europe it is leading to. This is about depopulation, plain and simple. The leadership of the West has come to see humans as a plague upon the earth.
Everything that follows in this post is simply the first page of an edible insect search, copy and pasted. The sheer optimism is striking, compared to the apocalyptic tone around Climate Change. They expect it to be nearly a trillion dollar market by 2026.
It might be time to take pollinators as a kind of mascot for a whole new way of being, since the goal seems to be to kill us off?

I read two very incredible books 1) "Sacred Cow: The Case for (Better) Meat: Why Well-Raised Meat is Good for You and Good for the Planet" by Diana Rodgers and Robb Wolf; and "The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability" by Lierre Keith. Turns out beef is the most intensely nutritious food a human can eat--ounce for ounce. Cows, bison, elk, deer and antelope are one integral part of the ecology that was when Indians shepherded the land. There are many regenerative farmers and ranchers already up and going here in Colorado. Cows get to live a natural cow's life until that one bummer day when they go to the slaughterhouse. The best part of all of this, besides that we humans get great nutrition, is that soil is brought back to life, and then does its job of sequestering carbon from the air.
I'm not concerned about the insect-eating craze (though I am concerned about the pollinators). My reasoning is very simple -- the people pushing the need to eat insects and the fools who are excited to "do their part" by eating insects are the same idiots who are always part of the "current thing." They have an attention span of a gnat (maybe they'll eat those too). This will go the same way as alternative meats, which was a big fad a few years ago, but sales have really slumped now. The same thing will happen with insects. Some people will continue to eat insects even when it is no longer the current thing, but most will happily go back to their former diets.
