Great progress in such a short amount of time. I bought my first guitar Oct 22. A little Gretsch parlor, also without knowing a single chord. It's amazing what just 15-30 minutes consistently can bring. The other day I played along to Green Day's Good Riddance and The Verve's 'Drugs Don't Work'. Now I'm completely hooked, can't feel my fingertips and fear I might never write again. Tickets to my world tour go on sale soon.

Awesome! And Thanks! And Welcome here! Yeah, when I started Marty of Marty Music said in his intro lessons, give it at least five minutes a day for two months, you will be amazed. No kidding, I have given it 30-120 min almost daily, and every day I surprise myself. Good luck on your world tour! I think I will maybe perform live in about three years, give or take. But my one year goal is to post three video's here of me singing and playing three songs.

I admire your courage in posting yourself playing as you progress, and glad you are as it really shows how far consistency can take someone. You could be going live in two years at this rate. Played bass in a band in another life. Portland in the 1990s before it became what it is. But I never learned to read chords. Always had to yell "What are the notes?" - "G! C! G! F#!" We played all the clubs around the PNW for a few years and it was one the best times of my life. It's one thing I'd go back to doing in the right situation just for the rush and to relive my dead youth.

Bad ass. Thanks for the props. I want to post these because I imagine they might be valuable to people just starting, to measure themselves against. Also I want to let my readers know lifelong learning is a thing, and important. Also, the magic of imagination, intention and will to change consciousness.

I'm happy to see you playing guitar! Are you taking lessons or going DIY?

DIY mostly. With help from Marty Music at youtube and his site. But I just started some lessons with Robb Justice.

You are obviously dedicated (and I love your smile when you make a glaring mistake!), so I think you will do well studying with those guys.

I'm only offering my [unrequested] input because I started out trying to learn guitar on my own and I got stuck. I test-drove a few instructors that I found in the Hollywood music rags, but I just got weird vibes from them and I didn't like their approach. A good friend recommended someone who he said was not only a great guitarist but an excellent teacher. Well, he was the last guitar teacher I had, because we ended up married, and we're still together in marriage and music (it'll be 30 years this July). Also, yes, I benefited massively from his approach and was able to write songs, record in the studio, and perform live after about 6 months of regularly practicing everything he assigned.

Wishing you a great experience with your practice and playing!

Congratulations! And your husband must be a good man indeed if he is that good of a teacher and worth keeping around for 30 years! I thought I was making great progress but it is hard to imagine playing and singing live in 3.5 months...

Yes, he's a good man.

As far as my story goes, there's a caveat: I was *already* a singer, poet, and formally trained flutist before playing guitar (then piano, bass, and drums followed pretty quickly after that).

If you don't have a similar background, your learning curve may be longer. Shit, that sounds like one of those Big Pharma ads!😆

However, the "how bad do I wanna" factor goes a long way!

I can dance, I can sing, I have rhythm, but I had a mental block about musical instruments. My goal is 3 songs, playing and singing, by the end of this year, and maybe sitting down in a venue and performing after 3 years. I can probably learn some campfire songs before long, but that is not really what I mean by three songs.

But regardless your training, it is not easy to build callouses or learning to handle the strings, so props to you.

"...it is not easy to build callouses..."

Did you read my article called "Bloody Blues"? It's a true story about my lesson in building callouses!

I'm glad you are moving forward on your desire to play guitar. I like to think of the instrument as a friend: The more we hang out and JUST PLAY, the more FUN we have together. The challenge is that learning to have actual SKILL requires accurate practice at slow tempos. Few or no mistakes, then bump up the tempo a notch or two. As they say in mindfulness meditation: There is no rush!

You've got quite a bit of natural talent. I hope we can get together one day and jam!

We take our opinions too seriously. Introspection is a different path.
