I have an acquaintance named Dave who I thought was a friend until I mentioned that I am dissident right, but really an anarch, and questioned his precious democratic party. I thought he was a kind and gentle fellow, that we were friends; I had talked with him at length about a business plan I have for a music venue/restaurant/plant nursery including cannabis, I told him he could play a part in. I thought we could have a civil conversation about politics. I was very wrong about that.
After our initial discussion, I pointed out in text that the dems have an unholy alliance with the deep state, intelligence community, media, edu and most corporations, aligning to censor Americans, and I showed him this, from Racket News:
this is a schematic of the American censorship complex, which I have come to see as the global managerial blob, the hive mind that mandates everything from sprinkler systems, to Chem trails now by 70 different governments, to mass migration. I'm writing an article about it now. The democrat party is an extension of it, everyone hostile to it will be labeled a fascist and terrorist, etc. Trump is like a foil used to prime people to accept what is turning into global totalitarianism.
He said I had lapped up the Kool-Aid real well, that I was projecting my own and Trump’s authoritarianism onto the democratic party.
To which I replied:
Rising censorship, covid policy, hate speech laws vastly expanding police powers, DEI reverse racism, Trans like a cultural hammer, you're either for Ukraine or Putin, closing bank accounts and businesses of people questioning official policy, millions of military aged men effectively allowed to invade, jailing right protestors but letting petty criminals run free.... these are not me projecting.
He later went on to call me a fascist, racist, misogynist, bigot, conspiracy nut, mocking my intelligence, condescending. At the end of our “conversation”, which was more like an onslaught of cluster B narcissistic abuse, I told him I would not be discussing politics with him again.
We have mutual friends, so I see him semi-regularly. As I had never been anything but kind and friendly with him, I endeavored to be civil. Though I am pretty sure I asked him sometime, how many jabs he took, after he was going on about his heart attack. He didn't like that. He might be 120 lbs with wet clothes on. He blames his heart attack on his two pack of cigarettes a day, which certainly didn’t help. To his credit he has not smoked a single cigarette since, though that hasn’t made him any less mean spirited.
Recently, he was part of a conversation with my (potential) business partner, at a bar. Dave had a lot of questions. I answered everything he asked, faithfully. He sent a text message to both of us the next day.
Dave: My goal for my having so many questions about your guys' endeavor is to make sure that you guys get your fair share of the take and don't just make someone else wealthy.
Me: The only one likely to get wealthy from this will be the State Government, which is going to take 25% off the top of gross profit, as well as tax investors and owners at 25-30% and everyone's paycheck at minimum 10%. Add in the feds and county probably 75% of the total take will go to governments.
Dave: Oh, I forgot. It's probably not even worth the trouble, then. You're too smart to work for peanuts."My last word on this, this will be the last time we discuss politics.". -Hunter Duncan-. Guess that's out the window?
Me: Government taking 75% is beyond politics, that is how Western civilization collapses into totalitarianism.
Dave: Keep your politics to yourself. You're out of your depth.
Me: No one appreciates condescending Dave.
Dave: I don't give any consideration to anything that a white nationalist thinks.
Me: You know nothing about me. You don't see me, you see a narrative not even of your own making.
Dave: You told me you were a white nationalist. I don't need to know anymore. You said you weren't going to discuss politics with me. You brought up taxes... not me. If you don't think taxes are political, you should know that I'm not going to be gaslighted. Seriously, Hunter, you want to drop this. I'm not going to play this game with you.
Me: I said I am a conservative right-wing dissident, but really a philosophical anarch. I have never and would never call myself a WN.
Dave: None of that is true. Maybe you should slow up on your alcohol consumption? You did say we weren't going to discuss politics, yet here we fucking are. I have no use for your bs. Please don't contact me again.
Me: Check your mean streak Dave. Anyone who calls me a White Nationalist, accuses me of gaslighting and condescends about my alcohol consumption and my intelligence is going to get an earful.
Dave: Don't be a snowflake. I'm blocking you.
Dave is a man-child who descends into name calling whenever we disagree, and is very arrogant, condescending and self righteous about it. The cognitive dissonance in that last line is quite a thing to behold. He made it up in his head, that I said I am a white nationalist, because I said I am a right wing dissident and I think it is a bad idea to have wide open borders for 10’s of millions of fighting age males to cross unchecked.
It’s not like I haven’t been called names before. I have been online in-forum since the mid ought’s, I have been called too many names to count. My concern is not being called names as such, my concern is most people locally think Dave is a kind and gentle fellow. If he starts telling people I am a white nationalist fascist etc, a lot of people will believe him.
I have heard Dave mention many times, the 14 points of fascism. He takes it as something like a secular gospel or catechism. I queried him about it once, but the one thing he could remember was “racism,” which technically is not even on the list. I was like, so everybody is a fascist then? Because just about everybody is racist about some people.
Dave inspired me to look deeper into it. He fancies himself something of an anti-fascist, but he is stuck in the 20th century, not realizing, like ANTIFA generally, he is merely a clueless tool of 21st century fascists.
This is the original list, the 14 points of Fascism, as outlined by Lawerence Britt in 2003, in Free Inquiry Magazine
Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.Rampant Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.Controlled Mass Media
Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.Obsession with National Security
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.Corporate Power is Protected
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.Labor Power is Suppressed
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed .Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.Fraudulent Elections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.
Umberto Eco, who was intimately familiar with actual fascists of the Italian variety, had a more nuanced take. Of it he said in his 1995 essay, Ur-Fascism, in the New York Times Review of Books:
I think it is possible to outline a list of features that are typical of what I would like to call Ur-Fascism, or Eternal Fascism. These features cannot be organized into a system; many of them contradict each other, and are also typical of other kinds of despotism or fanaticism. But it is enough that one of them be present to allow fascism to coagulate around it.
The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.”
The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.”
The cult of action for action’s sake. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.”
Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.”
Fear of difference. “The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.”
Appeal to social frustration. “One of the most typical features of the historical fascism was the appeal to a frustrated middle class, a class suffering from an economic crisis or feelings of political humiliation, and frightened by the pressure of lower social groups.”
The obsession with a plot. “Thus at the root of the Ur-Fascist psychology there is the obsession with a plot, possibly an international one. The followers must feel besieged.”
The enemy is both strong and weak. “By a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.”
Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.”
Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.”
Everybody is educated to become a hero. “In Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.”
Machismo and weaponry. “Machismo implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality.”
Selective populism. “There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.”
Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak. “All the Nazi or Fascist schoolbooks made use of an impoverished vocabulary, and an elementary syntax, in order to limit the instruments for complex and critical reasoning.”
20th Century vs 21st Century Fascism
Both lists are preoccupied with 20th century fascism, The first, a kind of egghead, ivory tower, distant observer version, Eco’s about direct experience with Italian fascism of the WWII period.
The fascism we are seeing in the 21st century is very different than the Fascism of the 20th. I think it is worth outlining, because the new fascism is using the old fascism to slander its enemies, to project onto anyone who questions them, the very things 21st century fascist are guilty of.
Working from the two lists above, this is my 21-point list of fascism for the 21st century. Thanks Dave!
Globalism: An incessant drive toward centralized, technocratic, managerial globalization, at once coercive, at the same time mostly unspoken - tyranny of the experts.
Weponizing Empathy: Using human rights, civil rights and social justice as a cudgel to beat “oppressors” with, flood first world nations with third world fighting age migrant men
Demonize the Scapegoat: Using MAGA and economic populism generally as a scapegoat, onto which to project authoritarian policies the regime embraces
Deconstruct the Military: Using the military to effectively launder trillions of dollars, while emasculating it, to replace with a migrant mercenary force.
Celebrate Degeneracy: The transification, gayification and sexualization of everything
Controlled Mass Media: propagandize, humiliate, gaslight, divide and demoralize the people, fan the flames of race hatred, fan the flames of the male/female divide, keep the rabble fighting to distract from the predatory behavior of the regime
Safetyism and Fear: An absolute obsession with safetyism at the expense of freedom, fear as a constant motivator
Destroy Democracy To Save It: Turning government into a one-party, messianic cult, making a false idol of democracy
Corporate power and the technocratic deep state become one
Demonize White: demonize white working people, white people generally, but especially white men.
Absolute and total ideological control over education and the arts, to make children and adults stupid, obedient, servile, ideological zealots or mere consumers.
Turn Law Enforcement Upside Down: Treating criminals like victims and victims like criminals, unleashing anarcho-tyranny in the streets and hordes of migrants to prey upon the people - keep the borders wide open.
Rampant corruption and DEI cronyism: widespread incompetence leading to the decline of complex systems and collapse of Western civilization, by design.
Fraudulent elections: digital voting that cannot be audited, with wide open, unchecked, unverified mail-in voting, with a legion of ethically and morally compromised people on the dole willing to keep the wealth pumps flowing.
Contempt for the Strong: Elevate the weak, marginal, petty, venal, mean spirited and incompetent
Disagreement is Terrorism: institutionalize and effectively automate censorship
Control the Narrative: Constantly change acceptable language, with an ever changing set of coercive incantations to elicit blind belief, and to confuse, humiliate and demoralize the rest
Weaponize the food supply and health care: Make everyone sick so they cannot rise up against you, while you make money treating their illness
Default to Lies: Lie about everything, gaslight every response
Self Hate and Guilt: Convince the people they are a plague upon the earth, make abortion on demand, sterilize kids, radically reduce the population
Replace the Native Citizenry
Nice post, William. I generally try to avoid the term "fascist" because it causes a Pavlovian, knee jerk reaction in whoever hears it in the west, therefore it conceals a topic more than it illuminates. I try to avoid discussing politics at all with shitlibs -- I have some in my family that I see semi-regularly -- no one ever changes anyone else's mind, it just devolves into hurt feelings and name calling. If they bring it up I deflect and change the topic. It's a hard lesson to learn, that facts/reason are simply beyond the comprehension of some of a certain mindset...
Great read. I'm very sorry that you are having to deal with Desperate Dave- desperate to feel he belongs to something, and therefore drank the Commy koolaid himself. It's TDS. Personally, after I tried to converse with most of my friends in 2016 as I was getting slowly red-pilled, and I voted for Jill Stein (🤷♀️), by 2020 I decided I had had enough. I realized when I stopped talking politics, they were going behind my back and badmouthing me. Actually, they were running out of things to talk about themselves, and became desperate to talk to me so they could bond together over new gossip. Thats how they re-enforce each others allegiance to their cult. By 2020 I had enough of them all. I got a new phone number and cut all contact. Recently, I trolled several of them on FB. They're all actively posting on FB in Total Trump Deranged Zeal. It's not just women, either. So my tiny glimpse of hope for them evaporated, and I feel my decision 4 years ago was good. Easy to do in a big city. Not so easy in a small town. God Bless You. I love reading your stuff.
