This is a fabulous post, Hunter. Shame and guilt are the lowest vibrations, which lead to blind obedience to "authorities" and "experts" while stifling maturation and individuation and the freedom accompanying that psycho-spiritual work.
I think of shame as a European or Asian thing. The culture you live in tries to shame you into conformity. A similar example may be honor culture, where a family will go as far to kill one of their own in order to restore family honor.
Individual shame that comes from within is a burden no one need know about. I agree that it is best to get rid of it. Life is hard, and I've become a hard person. I don't have time for shame.
I'm sad that 'fundamentalist Christianity' equaled shame to you. I would call myself a 'fundamentalist Christian' but I did not have that experience at all. In fact, I would agree with everything you wrote, except that I would give the credit to Jesus for taking away all the shame and guilt. Jesus came to save us, not judge us. He doesn't want you to self-flagellate or wallow in shame. He offers grace and mercy because of love for you. God bless.
There is Jesus, and there are Christians. Most Christians would not recognize Jesus if he did return. Some Christians I know are some of the kindest, strongest, most impressive people I know. Many others are Christian if only because that is what is expected of them. I have a great deal of faith in Jesus, but not much in Christianity. God bless you too.
Making friends everywhere you go, eh? You remind me of those Christians who are so detailed about what it takes to get into heaven, there are like eight people in heaven. Christian versions of Islamist Jihadists.
Which doppelganger has no shame?

Brilliant piece. Saved. Thank you for the link. I hadn't seen this.

I've felt embarrassed, but not ashamed.
